William S. Heckscher was a German-born art historian and artist who came to Duke in 1966 to become chairman of the Art and Art History Department. He served in that capacity until 1969. The formal study of art at Duke University began with the establishment of the Dept. of Aesthetics, Art, and Music in 1942.
